NFCA: Careful selection of foster parents and human, not administratively foster parents – this is about to improve foster care in our country
“Information campaigns to inform and recruit foster parents are a valuable tool to attract people to foster care, but are not sufficient for the process.”, commented the Board member of the National Association of Foster Care Alexander Milanov during a round table for foster care, which was held under the auspices of the governor of Montana.
„For the National Foster Care Association there is a serious problem that the country has more than 300 foster families where children are not accommodated. For Montana region the number of foster parents not caring for children is 10." said Milanov. It is time the foster parents’ campaigns to be directed to specific groups of foster children, according to their problems. It is necessary to recruit foster parents to face the needs of the children in the region, and should no foster families be approved, only to make progress, added Maria Blagoeva by association.
Experts of the Association outlined the problem with the assessment and approval of foster parents. „Foster care is starting to happen mechanically, only to pile up pieces, many foster parents do not receive support and they do not accommodate children. This affects the motivation of foster parents, and the wait is killing them. ", added Maria Blagoeva.
The Association further state that foster care is a partnership and must stop the vicious practice of foster parents are seen as servants and act against them by administrative methods.
After the foster care meeting, NFCA representatives visited the Children and Families Social Services Complex, where they learned about the experience of professionals in the preparation of foster parents. "I am impressed by the fact that CFSSC specialists work except in Montana and in other areas, such as Vidin and Vratsa. For more than five years the complex has trained more than 200 foster families in all fields.", said Maria Blagoeva.
On the territory of Montana act 110 foster families where are accommodated 128 children. More than a half of the foster families in the area are aged between 40 and 50, 11 per cent are retired.
