A story about the foster mother Margarita and about the good that changes destinies

People say that good things happen when you least expect them. Such is the experience of a foster parent who has been searching for his miracle all his life. And she has found it years later. In a newspaper.

Margarita Taneva is a woman with a long life experience. At the age of 57, Margarita has a daughter, a grandson, she had a happy marriage that ended too early with the death of her husband. For Margarita, this was the hardest moment, a moment she did not know how she would survive.

For years, the woman has carried this weight in her chest. She went to bed and got up with the thought of it, but every day she fought for her daughter, who is then only 4 years old, not to feel the absence of her father. She also fights to continue, as before, to endow the world and the people around her with goodness and miracles.

"I have always felt an inner need to help people, to do something good for them, although little.", she says.

So one day, after years of searching for the good that would help her overcome her sadness, she came across an article. In a newspaper.

"We are looking for foster parents," was the title of an article dated year 2015, Margarita recalled.

She started reading. However, the article did not provide enough information. I went online. "Foster care" and clicked on the first link that came out.

"It was the site of the “ For our children” Foundation."

She read more. She called the Foundation. They explained her. She understood what "foster care" really was and what about these people being parents, but only temporarily. She realized that she could help children left without a family, children who, without foster parents, were doomed to live in a home…

"And we all know what that means."

She applied. She opened her doors to all kinds of specialists - she wanted, more than anything, to be a foster parent. She went through a 6-month training, in which Margarita found out in practice what awaited her if she becomes a foster parent. The foundation introduced her to active foster parents. They told her about all those hidden moments of true happiness that children give them. Happiness that had no equivalent. From them she learned about the most difficult moments - the arrival of each new child… and separarting with them.

Her daughter and her friends were most afraid of the moments of separation, many times they asked her how she would survive them. To this question, she replied that when you look at a child, albeit temporarily, with the attitude that you are doing it for his good, you should ignore your feelings. To learn to love another stranger, to give him all your love, with the clear awareness that he will not remember you and most likely will never know about you. But a part of you will always live in them.

"The mental attitude starts with the application itself. Even then you should be aware that you have to take care of this child, give them everything they need, knowing that at some point you will part with them. Because then they will find their own family, and the foster parent's task is to give him all the love he should receive from his family until he finds it.", she said.

After passing an assessment, in mid-2016, Margarita was approved as a professional foster parent for newborns and babies of age up to 6 months old.

She chose to take care of babies because she believes that if an abandoned child gets a chance to live in a family from the first day, then his adaptation will be easier later, and he will be adopted much faster.

Her theory is justified - for the past 2 years, a total of 3 children have passed through her care, all adopted before the age of 1 year. And although it is difficult for her to part with her children every time, Margarita accepts her professional path not as a job, but as a mission that changes human destinies. And she does not give up.

"Being a foster parent is something that changes your own destiny - I feel a satisfaction that I can't describe, I can't put it into words."

With foster care, Margarita found that good, which she had been waiting for a long time.

And that good she will continue to give to the most defenceless creatures to feel loved, protected and find a permanent family quickly.

And around the Christmas holidays, Margarita is even happier to have chosen this path. Because together with their daughter, grandson and little Yolina, whom she is taking care of at the moment, they have had the most magical Christmas. A Christmas that most probably Yolina wouldn't have otherwise.
